Micron Rolls Out New 24Gb GDDR7 (3GB) DRAM, Adding Third Source for High-Capacity Graphics Memory

Micron recently published a technical brief introducing its newly launched 24Gb GDDR7 graphics memory, commonly referred to

 as a 3GB per-chip variant, delivering a data transfer rate of 36Gbps — a step up from its existing 16Gb (2GB) GDDR7 model 

capped at 32Gbps.

Micron is not the first vendor to commercialize 24Gb GDDR7 solutions. Samsung and SK Hynix rolled out equivalent high-density

 products as early as last year, with faster maximum speed grades: Samsung’s 24Gb GDDR7 reaches up to 42.5Gbps, while SK 

Hynix’s mass-production version hits 40Gbps. Separately, SK Hynix is still developing an experimental GDDR7 prototype targeting 

an industry-leading 48Gbps pin speed.


Micron Unveils 24Gb GDDR7 DRAM Running at 36Gbps for GPU & AI Accelerator Hardware

While both Samsung and SK Hynix offer faster 24Gb GDDR7 variants, NVIDIA has yet to adopt these ultra-high-speed memory parts 

for its consumer graphics lineup. The fastest GDDR7 deployed on current NVIDIA gaming GPUs tops out at 30Gbps for the GeForce 

RTX 5080, with lower-tier models limited to just 28Gbps.


From a pure performance perspective, the gap between current shipping speeds and the cutting-edge 40Gbps+ grades is substantial, 

making Micron’s 36Gbps 24Gb GDDR7 launch appear somewhat delayed. Even so, amid a prolonged tight DRAM supply cycle, the 

arrival of a third qualified supplier for 24Gb GDDR7 delivers tangible supply chain advantages for NVIDIA and all GPU OEMs, expanding

vendor diversification and mitigating single-source production risks.


At present, only two NVIDIA graphics products ship with 24Gb (3GB) GDDR7 memory: the GeForce RTX 5090 Mobile laptop GPU and

the RTX Pro 6000 Blackwell workstation graphics card, both of which account for relatively low overall shipment volumes.


Industry rumors previously indicated NVIDIA planned broad adoption of 24Gb GDDR7 across its mid-range GeForce RTX 50 SUPER 

refresh lineup, covering three SKUs: RTX 5080 SUPER, RTX 5070 Ti SUPER, and RTX 5070 SUPER. However, surging global DRAM 

pricing and persistent memory allocation shortages have cast heavy uncertainty over this mid-cycle refresh project. Multiple hardware 

industry sources warn the SUPER series may face full cancellation, with no viable launch window expected for the remainder of 2026.


Key Industry Background

Global memory manufacturers are prioritizing GDDR7 wafer output for high-margin AI data center accelerators, restricting allocation 

for consumer gaming GPUs and driving sharp component price hikes. Single 24Gb GDDR7 die costs far exceed legacy 16Gb variants, 

creating steep BOM cost inflation for consumer graphics cards built around multi-chip memory arrays. The constrained supply chain 

has forced NVIDIA to reconsider its original roadmap for the RTX 50 SUPER family, with launch timelines potentially pushed back to 

CES 2027 at the earliest.
